Introduction

The research project “Boko Haram, Islamic Protest, and National Security” highlights one of the most serious problems of the contemporary world order - ideologically and religious motivated violence. Terrorist movements like Boko Haram represent a challenge to an understanding of contemporary Islam, distorted economic and political development, and the injustices of the international world order. The resonance between local conditions and trans-national problems raises serious issues of public policy and national security. These problems are perceived in religious terms that have dangerous consequences in terms of perceptions of Islam that undermine efforts to promote multicultural societies and peaceful interaction globally.

Project History

The SSHRC funded project, Islamic Protest, Terrorism and Security in Africa, began in 2018 through the collaborative efforts of a number of researchers at different institutions across Africa and North America. While many of these authorities in their various fields had worked together on different projects, research and publications, this was to be a collaboration to tackle the important issue affecting Northeast Nigeria, the countries surrounding Lake Chad, and West Africa more generally arising from Boko Haram attacks on civilian populations.

The visual identity of the project was developed to best represent the seriousness of the problem of terrorist movements in Africa while providing a clean and fluid layout accessible to researchers and the general public. The logo and visual concept for the project was designed by Tatiane Lima and later adapted by Fernanda Sierra Suárez. The logo design consists of a rough and textured font with acronym IPTSA inside a squared shape - suggesting their close relationship. The color pallet of the site mirrors the logo following a monochromatic scheme with minimal elements. The reliance on black and white photography is also important to the identity of the site as it highlights the stark reality of this global issue. The website is open-source and database-driven. The user front-end of the website is developed in HTML5 using bootstrap 4.0 framework that provides pre-written Javascript and CSS classes. The backed database is developed in MySQL and PHP interface.
